This simple skill will make you a better leader

Take a moment - and think of the best leader you've ever Picture them specifically.

WHAT QUALITIES MADE THEM A GOOD LEADER?

One of the best leaders I've had the privilege of working with was supportive, compassionate and modelled a balanced lifestyle of work and life. She modelled effective stress management and knew when she needed to rest and re-energize.

She was incredibly SELF-AWARE.

In fact, studies show that self-awareness is one of the key qualities of the best leaders out there.

Being self-aware is means that we have the ability to be INTROSPECTIVE - aware of our own mental and emotional processes.

If we're honest - most of us are only inwardly focused when we're in a state of ALARM! ie. we're starving, or exhausted.

HOW DOES YOUR STATE AFFECT YOUR TEAM?

  • ONLY 7% OF EMPLOYEES SAY THAT THEIR STRESSED OUT LEADERS EFFECTIVELY LEAD THEIR TEAMS ONLY

  • 11% OF EMPLOYEES WITH STRESSED OUT LEADERS ARE HIGHLY ENGAGED AT WORK

How can you practice SELF-AWARENESS?

TAKE A MOMENT TO BECOME AWARE OF YOUR MIND.

What thoughts do you notice in your mind right now?

Maybe you're thinking - "I don't have time to read this, I have way more important things I should be doing!" Maybe you're thinking about a big meeting you have coming up or how you're going to meet that deadline.

If you could describe the quality of your mind like a weather report - what would the weather be?

Stormy?

Calm?

Sunny with clouds?

A Hurricane?

Just taking time to notice your mind, to turn your attention inward, helps develop your self-awareness and will make you a BETTER LEADER (with or without a title).

Remember:

Life is not just one big long to do list.

I believe a 'successful' one is filled with WELLBEING, HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
